So you have gathered your data, step 1 is complete. But now that you have it, how do you calculate your Baseline emissions?
You are going to need a couple of things
- Accurate and up to date Emission factors
- An excel File or carbon accounting software
- An understanding of carbon accounting formulas
Seems like a lot, we know, but you don’t need to worry about it. We have all of that built into the GreenFeet platform.
- What is an Emission Factor? An Emission Factor (EF) is a coefficient used to estimate the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced per unit of activity or input. It provides a standardised way to calculate emissions from various sources and processes by relating them to a specific activity, such as energy use, fuel consumption, or production processes.
- Why an Excel file or Carbon accounting software? Well, it just makes life easier if we’re being honest. Using a correctly formatted template or piece of software takes all the guesswork out of the calculations and ensures you get accurate results every time.
- In carbon accounting, formulas are used to estimate the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced by an entity, process, or product.
The most common formula for calculating emissions is:
Emissions=Activity Data×Emission Factor
Where: Activity Data is the measure of the action that generates emissions (e.g., kWh of electricity consumed, litres of fuel burned, kilometres travelled).
Now that you understand the process, you just need to repeat that process for each relevant category!
If that seems like a lot, or slightly overwhelming, we can help out.
We have a step-by-step training guide that will make you feel like an emissions expert in no time. Or Psht…We can do it for you.
